"Should be in English"
No, it should not. Please do not make such a change without asking first. There is no reason for which the tagline ought to be in English —by the way Index is a translation as well, not just the natural one, and having English without its corresponding language code (Index/en) is indeed something that we've accepted because of technical limitations, not because it makes sense to mark such a divide: up to now all the potencial attendees may have talked English, but by perpetuating it you only get a ghetto-conference in English, when it should be increasingly multilingual and multicultural just as Wikimedia projects are. This year's Wikimanía is to be bilingual as expressed by the English/Español below the logo, and the real site starts on Index/[ln], only when the visitor has selected his desired language. The presence of the Wikimanía - 26 al 28... in the portal page is only a reception in the home language and it makes no sense to change it: we may instead delete it, but I think that we can let it there as it has been up to now. The official welcoming text is available in both languages, as I've said, just at the bottom. --Galio 22:45, 21 March 2009 (UTC). PS: just seen that you've put it in English on top. It may work, if we don't care about wasting vertical space —see, that horrible logo we've provided is already a space-eating pacman. Regarding your comment on the last dummy edit, I hope you're talking about the tagline, not the whole thing. The page should be bilingual because the conference is bilingual, and this sole leap forward guarantees new attendees that otherwise wouldn't have had the opportunity of taking part in an English-only event. In fact the whole site should avoid language-specific pages, but as we know we can't avoid having a few.
- I didn't mean it in that way. As a translation coordinator, my goal is to keep things as multilingual as possible. It's just that it might be confusing to some readers who are new to wikis or for some reason don't know about the page being in their language. (ie. if they just wanted to quickly check the dates.) Casey suggested to me that we put the English on top instead of getting rid of Spanish, which looks fine. --Az1568 23:11, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
- Fine then, let's go like that. I still find that 26 al 28 de agosto and August 26-28 are sufficiently similar, and that there is no reason for which non-English speakers would prefer English. O todos o ninguno, I'd say. But we are going now with todos —that's just two for this year, at least regarding official support— and so it's OK. --Galio 23:55, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
